NFL Top-100 Players Show Revealed Players 90-81, and Newton Made the List Again

It’s that time of year everyone, the NFL has begun revealing the list of the Top 100 players in the NFL. Cam Newton was the first Panther revealed on the list coming in at 87 out of 100.

Many fans will be chirping about how this spot is to low, but unlike most polls that are voted upon by members of the Associated Press or the larger media outlets, this is one of the few sports polls that’s voted upon by the athletes that currently play on the field.

Now, all that gas-bagging is to set up what I believe about the spot: the players got Newton’s ranking exactly right.

Newton Started the Year Strong But Faltered as it Went On

Cam, even when stacked next to his MVP-caliber season, was on pace to have some of his best numbers as a quarterback in his entire career. but during the team’s ninth game of the season in the now infamous 52-21 blowout loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Newton reaggravated a shoulder injury that was surgically repaired earlier in 2017.

Newton’s injury got progressively worse as the season went on, in what could only be described as a player trying to do too much when he was injured, which ended up hindering the team instead of propelling them to what should’ve been a playoff season.

The season ended at a disappointing 7-9 after a 6-2 start to the season, which included a seven-game losing streak that was started by the loss to the Steelers. Ron Rivera was once again put on the hot seat after another season finishing below-.500 and Panthers’ quarterback had more shoulder surgery.

Those factors were exactly why Newton deserved to be on the Top-100 but fairly low on the list.

Here is What the Player’s Had to Say About Newton

Most of the Players were fairly complimentary of the former Heisman Trophy-winner, including Jameis Winston who said that Newton was a big inspiration for him during his college years at Florida State.

Former Panthers  Devin Funchess and Thomas Davis also touched on how Newton’s injury somewhat derailed the season for the team and mention that Newton was having one of his best years as a pro.

You can check out the video below and see the full breakdown of Cam’s rank of the list. The Panther’s quarterback will look to rebound after what seems to be successful shoulder surgery from Dr. James Andrews and hopefully, the Panthers will continue the upward trend they showed during the beginning of the season in 2018.
