UNC: Tar Heels have a chance to put their stamp on ACC
The Tar Heels have an opportunity to lay a solid foundation in a transition year.
Creating a culture is never a small task, but what if that culture is already built and just needs a spark to revamp what once was? A fan-favorite school that just needs to do one thing to bring back excitement – win.
The North Carolina Tar Heels, known for their top college basketball program, has had their football program go down a dark path, but a bright light has shined through and his name is Mack Brown. There are many reasons to look forward to the upcoming college football season as Carolina football looks to start on the path back to relevancy.
The UNC Tar Heels are expected to continue the recent trend of playing multiple quarterbacks versus going the traditional one starting quarterback route.
Mack Brown said, “We really need two, you can’t play with one anymore, we’re going to try and get at least two of them ready to play, and we would like to have all three of them ready to play.”
The quarterback has been a troubling position for Carolina in recent years, but there are some promising talent in Sam Howell, Cade Fortin, and Jace Ruder. Howell is a 4-star recruit with a cannon arm who makes very good decisions while staying in the pocket, however for the season opener against the Gamecocks, Fortin or Ruder are expected to be the QB’s due to experience from last season. Despite Fortin or Ruder starting the season, expect for Howell to be the best out of the three and utilized the most by the end of the season.
The schedule The Carolina Tar Heels start the season against the South Carolina Gamecocks followed by games against Miami, Wake Forest, Appalachian State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Duke, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Mercer, and ending the season against NC State. The Tar Heels have some tough challenges ahead, but can take advantage of the spotlight against teams like Clemson if they are able to compete with the 2018 national champions.
In any team’s best case scenario they would end up in the 4 playoff race for the national championship, however for the Tar Heels a more realistic expectation is right outside the top 25 in AP poll. I predict the Tar Heels to finish with a 6-6 record right at .500 with room to grow and improve. Despite a lackluster season that could be on the horizon it will lay down the foundation to creating a Tar Heel foot stamp in college football for seasons to come.
