No. 5 prospect in the state of North Carolina signs with the Tar Heels

North Carolina and head coach Mack Brown pulled off a massive recruiting win on Monday, when four-star defensive end Myles Murphy signed with the Tar Heels. Murphy is a 6’4″, 280 pounder from Dudley High School in Greensboro and marks a major coup for the Tar Heels coaching staff.

Murphy is by far the highest ranked recruit in the 2020 class for the Tar Heels, as he is the 117th ranked player in the nation by 247 Sports and the No. 5 player at his position. He’s the fourth 4-star recruit to sign in the 2020 class and the third on the defensive side of the ball. Murphy chose North Carolina over offers from Alabama, Wisconsin, Florida, South Carolina, LSU, Miami (FL), Michigan, NC State, Notre Dame and several others.

Murphy has great size and should probably transition to defensive tackle. He’s put on significant weight since his sophomore year and should continue to bulk throughout his senior year and when he arrives on campus. He plays with speed and force on the edge, acting as an excellent run defender.

Recruiting under Brown is starting to take off. The Tar Heels now have the 13th ranked class in the nation in 2020 and fourth overall in the ACC. North Carolina is pacing well ahead of in-state rivals such as N.C. State (27), Wake Forest (42), and Duke (54).

The class can take another big turn if No. 1 ranked Desmond Evans elects to commit to North Carolina, potentially joining Murphy and three-star commits Clyde Pinder, Sean Martin, AJ Beatty, and Kaimon Rucker.

The emergence of UNC as a player in recruiting is a troubling trend for ACC opponents. If the Tar Heels can continue to make waves, Brown could be on his way to turning around a program that has won just five games the past two seasons.
