The Hurricanes busy offseason continues with what should be a lively free agency period

The Hurricanes have had a furious start to the offseason. After a Eastern Conference Finals appearance, Carolina has opted for an aggressive approach to the summer months, starting with bringing in 12 draft picks and making two massive trades, bringing in Patrick Marleau and shipping out defenseman Calvin de Haan.

Now comes the crucial stage of the offseason, as the Hurricanes enter free agency with a myriad of needs, the most pressing being a starting goaltender. The Hurricanes have internal options in Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney, but neither inspires confidence as a No. 1 option.

The ongoing negotiations with RFA Sebastian Aho play a major factor, as he is destined to receive a major contract that will eat up a good chunk of the Hurricanes cap space. Carolina must also decide on new contracts for Justin Williams (if he wants to play), Greg McKegg, Brock McGinn, Michael FerlandSaku Maenalanen, and Haydn Fleury.

No matter how the internal negotiations work out, it’s clear the Hurricanes will be involved and active during the free agency period. Here’s five players the Hurricanes should target.
