Cam Reddish completes the trade that started in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The Atlanta Hawks selected Duke small forward Cam Reddish with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, using a pick that the Hawks acquired from the Dallas Mavericks a year ago. The Hawks traded back two spots in the 2018 NBA Draft from pick three to pick five, ultimately passing up on Luka Doncic for Trae Young and a 2019 first round pick.

That first round pick ended up being Reddish, a raw talent with as much upside as anyone not named Williamson in this draft. He also comes with as much risk as anyone in this draft.

Reddish was a five-star recruit coming to Duke and burst onto the scene with a 22-point performance in his debut against Kentucky. What followed was a wildly inconsistent season where Reddish showed flashes of being a bona-fide star.

He drilled the game-winner against Florida State and scored 24 points against Boston College in February. He also shot 2-11 against Syracuse in a game where the Blue Devils desperately needed him to play well.

Reddish shot 33-percent from three in 2018-19, and only 35-percent overall while averaging 13.5 points per game. Not great numbers from a guy relied on to be a shooter.

However, if his work-ethic and want to become great is high enough, Reddish could end up being the best player in this draft. He has the size (6-8″, 2018) and play-making ability to make a massive impact in the league. Teamed up with the young talent that he joins on the Hawks, and suddenly it’s easy to see him thriving in Atlanta.

The Doncic-Young trade will shape the future of the two teams for years to come and it’s really hard not to love how well the Hawks came away positioned. Young averaged 19.1 points per game last season and seemed to gain swagger as the year went on. The trade was a close call between Young and Doncic on their own, but when you add a talent like Reddish and the upside he possesses, the Hawks are the clear early winners of the trade.
