The unheralded prospect is going to make a name for himself

You probably hadn’t heard of Davin Vann before he committed to N.C. State yesterday. A 6’2″ 273 lb defensive tackle from Cary High School in North Carolina, Vann was an unranked prospect by 247, until N.C. State’s interest and his commitment instantly vaulted him to a 3-star.

Well then let me be first person to tell you, Vann is going to be an absolute force under Dave Doeren and will ultimately end up being another in the assembly line of N.C. State defensive lineman to be drafted into the NFL.

Before adding N.C. State, Vann had offers from Louisville, East Carolina, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina and Navy among other smaller schools. He’s now ranked the No. 16 prospect in the state of North Carolina and the No. 46 defensive line prospect overall in the nation.

On the field, Vann is a freight train, overpowering and playing faster than the majority of his overmatched opponents. During his junior year, Vann had 79 tackles, 13 sacks and 25 tackles for loss.

Vann shows excellent strength, quickness and football IQ, displaying the ability to track the ballcarrier and making big-time plays. Vann consistently made plays in the run game and was a force rushing the passer all season.

And for a talented defensive lineman, I don’t know that there is a better school to pick than N.C. State. The Wolfpack have had four defensive lineman selected early in recent NFL drafts, including Bradley Chubb, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Credit has to be given to Doeren and his staff for unearthing a major gem right on their doorstep and then swooping in to seal the deal. Early in his tenure Doeren talked about putting a wall around North Carolina and not allowing talented recruits to leave the state. While most people assume that is only applicable to the 5-star recruits that had traditionally left for the SEC or Clemson, kudos to Doeren and staff for making a habit of taking two and three star recruits and turning them into high-level contributors on the next level.

While many haven’t heard of Vann yet, look for that to change very quickly once he hits the field at N.C. State.
