Pirates lose big in first game of Super Regional matchup vs Louisville

East Carolina continued its quest to reach Omaha as it opened its three game set against 7-seed Louisville. The Cardinals are the toughest test ECU has faced this season and the Pirates had hoped to get off to a good start with their ace Jake Agnos starting in game one but ended up in hole after a big offensive day from the Cardinals. The Pirates dropped Game one 14-1 and now must once again dig themselves out of a bad first day.

Batting Report

The Pirates bats went quiet in Game one against a tough pitching staff. East Carolina scattered seven hits, but were only able to push across one run in the game. Spencer Brickhouse stayed hot, going 2-4 at the plate and providing the lone RBI for the Pirates on his homer in the 6th.

ECU threatened in the 3rd with Bryant Packard singling to left then Alec Burleson reaching first after getting hit by a pitch. Both runners then advanced into scoring position at third and second respectively but the threat was nullified by a Jake Washer strikeout.

The Pirates would only advance one more batter into scoring position in the game, when Dusty Baker reached on an infield single and then reached second on a Brickhouse single.

Pitching Report

Agnos started the game strong, cruising through the first three innings without allowing a hit. that all came to an abrupt end in the fourth. Agnos would finish the inning, but not before allowing four runs on five hits.

The ECU bullpen went on to give up 10 runs on 13 hits over the next four innings. The Pirates used six pitchers in those four innings, none going more than 1 1/3 innings and only recording one  strikeout in that time.

Key Moment

In the 5th inning, the Cardinals put up five runs to extend their lead to nine and the rout was on. Agnos turned it over to the bullpen after giving up four runs in the 4th and the Cardinals lineup smelled blood. The Pirates would use three pitchers before the inning ended and by then the game was all but decided.

ECU now faces an uphill battle after dropping the first of this three game series. The Pirates must now win back to back games if they want to advance to their first College World Series.
