The Carolina Hurricanes scored a late goal to force overtime but fall short in the extra period to the New York Islanders by a score of 2-1.

The Carolina Hurricanes looked like they were about to start the 2018-19 season the same way the 2017-18 season ended with an overtime win. However, a goal by New York Islanders’ Josh Bailey less than a minute in to overtime ended the Hurricanes’ chances.

After a scoreless first period, the Islanders were able to strike first with a goal by Valtteri Filpulla about midway through the second period to break the tie.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes were the more aggressive team for most of the game. They outshot their opponents with 46 shots to only 20 by the Islanders. They also won two-thirds of the faceoffs (33 to 22) with Jordan Staal leading the way with 19.

Even though the Hurricanes won the shot and faceoff battle, they weren’t able to get past Islanders’ goalie Thomas Greiss until late in the third. It wasn’t until 1:35 left in regulation, with the Hurricanes pulling their goalie, that a shot from Dougie Hamilton hit off Jordan Staal to tie the game up.

However, the Islanders entered overtime with a man advantage after Micheal Ferland was called for tripping with less than five seconds left in regulation. The 4-3 advantage was enough as the Islanders were able to score under 45 seconds into the extra period.

The Hurricanes entered the season with high hopes after having a preseason record of 5-0-1 however losing the season opener is something fans have come to expect. This franchise has lost the first game of the season seven out of the past eight seasons, with the lone win coming last year.
