Turnovers sink UNC upset bid

The chances of an upset by the Tar Heels seemed like a long shot and if they were to grab a win in Miami, they would have need to play a near perfect game.

That is not what happened as the Tar Heels had six turnovers, three interceptions and three fumbles. It is almost impossible to win when you have six turnovers but it makes it even tougher when three of them were returned for touchdowns.

The Hurricanes’ defense helped build their lead to double digits when they were able to return a fumble by Nathan Elliott in the first quarter to extend their lead to 14-3. Then in the second quarter, it was Joe Jackson who picked off Chazz Surratt near midfield on a screen pass.

The final turnover that was returned for a touchdown was in the fourth quarter, and this touchdown effectively ended any possible comeback attempt when Romeo Finley picked off Surratt again, this time in the red zone, and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown.

The Tar Heels beat themselves with the turnovers and really didn’t give them much of a chance in this game against Miami.
