Defense

Defensive Line

The Panthers’ defense has always been known for having a stout defensive line. However, against the Falcons this group got pushed around and failed to stop the run game or really get pressure on Matt Ryan. The Falcons finished averaging 5.3 yards per rush attempt and Matt Ryan was not sacked once and only hurried twice. This group’s struggle had a ripple effect through the rest of the defense.

Grade: D+

Linebackers

Along with the defensive line, the linebackers of Luke Kuechly and Shaq Thompson never really got a chance to impose their will. Kuechly finished leading the team in tackles with eight, including two for a loss. However Thompson had a quiet day with only two tackles. This was certainly a disappointing performance after a strong game against the Dallas Cowboys Week 1.

Grade: C+

Secondary

It doesn’t matter who is under center, if an NFL quarterback has the time Matt Ryan did, the secondary can only do so much. While Ryan did complete 82% of his passes against the Panthers, they did a good job limiting the passing yards with only 272. More importantly, this group had a strong game against Julio Jones, who finished with five receptions for 64 yards and no touchdown.
