Head coach Dave Clawson of the Wake Forest football team will have a new option at starting quarterback this week. However, that doesn’t mean he should make a change.

Prior to the 2018 season, the quarterback position for the Wake Forest football team had plenty of uncertainty. This was due to the fact that expected starting QB Kendall Hinton was suspended for the first three games.

This left Clawson to decide from either redshirt sophomore Jamie Newman or true freshman Sam Hartman. The decision was essentially made for the head coach though as Newman was dealing with an injury and the Demon Deacons entered the season with a true freshman under center.

This is no doubt risky however after these past three games, that risk has seemed to pay off. This also means that while Hinton is eligible this week to return, the Wake Forest football team should stick with Sam Hartman.

In the first three games, Hartman has averaged 278 passing yards, with an additional 64 rushing yards, per game with seven total touchdowns (six passing, one rushing). The biggest blemish on Hartman’s performance to date has to be the turnovers as he has six in the first three games (five interceptions, one fumble).

Meanwhile, the offense as a whole has played pretty well with Hartman under center. The coaching staff would not want to disrupt the chemistry that was built over the first three games.

If the Demon Deacons stick with Hartman at quarterback, this doesn’t mean that Kendall Hinton won’t be apart of this offense. Prior to the season, the team was preparing for this very situation and had Hinton lined up as a slot receiver. This could make a position that was already a strength of this offense and deep, even better.

The Wake Forest football team had their first real test of the season against the Boston College Eagles. They came up a little bit short by a final score of 41-34.

The Demon Deacons will need to learn from their mistakes quickly as they will be facing number eight Notre Dame. This will likely be another shootout but Hartman has proven he is up to the challenge and has earned the chance to remain the starter for the rest of the season.
