Duke Football: Key Takeaways from victory over Army
Secondary looks shaky
The biggest concern coming out of the game against Army, aside from Brown’s knee, was how the secondary looked against Army. The Black Knights threw for 197 yards, including pass completions of 45 and 32 yards.
The question is whether this is because of the talent in this group or if the defense wasn’t prepared for Army to throw it as many times as they did. The Black Knights run an option offense and primarily have just run the ball.
On Friday night, Army’s quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. threw the ball 21 times, which is significantly more than the one pass attempt they had last year.
While it has to be a concern for how the secondary played for the Duke football team, it is worth giving them another chance before raising the red flag. There performance could be chalked up to them not being prepared for Army’s passing attack.
However, the Blue Devils have Northwestern next on the schedule, who has a very good quarterback in Clayton Thorson. This will be a big challenge for them and will give a clear indication where this group is.
