While NFL teams are trimming their roster, the Carolina Panthers added to it with a trade for offensive tackle Corey Robinson.

The Carolina Panthers will be working on cutting their roster down to the league required 53 players by 4 PM today. However, in the process of cutting it down, they added to it on Saturday morning.

The team announced that they had traded with the Detroit Lions for offensive tackle Corey Robinson. The Panthers will send a undisclosed pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, which will likely be a late round pick.

Robinson is very familiar with the Carolinas, growing up in Havelock and then playing his college football at South Carolina. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2015 in the seventh round.

It clearly makes sense for the Panthers to want to add depth to their offensive line as they have been hit very hard by injuries. The team lost right tackle Daryl Williams in the first couple of practices at training camp, then lost guard Amini Silatolu.

Recently, the Panthers saw left tackle Matt Kalil go down with a knee injury of his own that forced Taylor Moton, who was starting at right tackle shift to the other side. The replacement at right tackle, Jeremiah Sirles, suffered an injury in the preseason game against the Patriots.

While the need for offensive tackle makes sense, it is surprising to see the team trade for Robinson. He suffered a foot injury in the Lions’ last preseason game Thursday and according to CBS Sports, the severity of the injury is unknown.

This is not the first time Robinson has been hurt in his career as he missed most of last season after being placed on injured reserve, as Strickland notes in his article.

While it is hard to fault the Carolina Panthers for going out to get a player who has starting experience this close to the season, it doesn’t make much sense to go get a player who appears to be injury-prone.
