Wake Forest Football: Top Takeaways from 23-17 victory over Tulane
Must take the good with the bad with Sam Hartman
The true freshman had an up and down first game for the Wake Forest football team. He finished the game 31 of 51 for 378 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also was the team’s leading rusher with 64 yards on the ground.
The coaching staff clearly had confidence in Hartman, asking him to throw the ball 51 times against Tulane. There was no easing in for him and for the most part he rose to the occasion.
However, he also made some potentially costly mistakes and at time tried to do too much. In the second half, he was facing pressure from the Green Wave and as he tried to escape the pocket he decided to try to throw the ball which ended up in the waiting hands of Tulane.
These are the type of plays that Hartman will need to learn a sack is better than the alternative.
The performance as a whole was one that should have fans excited as Hartman really showed some promise and made some beautiful throws. He should remain the starter next week when the Demon Deacons face Towson.
