Which backup QB steps up?

The battle between Garrett Gilbert and Taylor Heinicke is too close to call as neither quarterback is separating himself from the other.

The Panthers have been fortunate for close to a decade with Derek Anderson as their backup quarterback. The former Pro Bowler proved to be invaluable at times and provided stability at the most important position.

The team decided not to bring back Anderson and elected to go in another direction. That direction is two quarterbacks, Gilbert and Heinicke, who has never thrown an NFL pass in a regular season game.

However, against the Bills both quarterbacks had strong performances with Heinicke going 7 of 9 for 121 passing yards and one touchdown while Gilbert went 7 of 12 for 93 passing yards and one touchdown.

It will be worth watching if one of these two quarterbacks is able to separate himself in this battle against the Dolphins.
