Carolina Panthers: Top takeaways from preseason victory over Buffalo Bills
Panthers should be concerned about backup QB
The Carolina Panthers have not had to worry about this position for close to a decade with Derek Anderson backing up Cam Newton. However, the team decided to go young with Gilbert, a decision they may regret this year.
The hope is certainly that the Panthers never have to turn to Gilbert because that means Newton has remained healthy all year. However, after his performance against the Bills its hard to imagine the coaching staff having confidence in Gilbert if he is forced to play an extended period of time.
The 27-year old led the Panthers in two drives in the first half and both drives went three and out and finished with a combined -4 yards. On the third drive, he completed some nice passes and finished the half completing four of eight passes for 31 yards.
The second half looked better for both Gilbert, as well as Taylor Heinke, and the two QBs finished the game combined to throw 14 completions on 21 pass attempts for 214 passing yards and two touchdowns. However, a majority of the success came against Buffalo’s second and third string teams.
Depending on how the rest of the preseason plays out, it would not be surprising to see the Panthers look at adding a veteran quarterback to this roster.
