Former four-star quarterback Cord Sandberg picked Auburn over the NC State Football team on Monday.

The NC State football team was one of three schools, along with Auburn and LSU, former four-star quarterback Cord Sandberg was deciding between this summer. Sandberg, who had pursued a career in baseball, eventually decided to sign with Auburn to resume his football career.

Sandberg was a four-star quarterback in 2012 and originally signed with Mississippi State out of high school. However, he never made it to Starkville after being drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013.

He played six seasons in the Phillies’ minor league system, reaching AA last year. He played in 54 games this year before voluntarily retiring from baseball to pursue his football career. He finished the minors with a .243 career batting average with 29 home runs and 173 RBI.

This doesn’t impact the Wolfpack’s plans for this season as Ryan Finley is securely locked in as the team’s starting quarterback. He has the potential to be one of the top quarterbacks in college football this year, per his head coach.

However, Dave Doeren will be looking for Finley’s replacement next year and Sandberg would have likely been competing for the starting job. The competition for starting quarterback will be one of the key battles next year and will likely be a two-man race.

The favorite will probably be Matt McKay, who appears to be in line for the backup job this year behind Finley. The redshirt freshman has looked good on the scout team and earned Offensive Scout Team Player, according to Michael Clark.

The other quarterback to watch next year will be Devin Leary. The four-star quarterback will be joining the NC State football team with high expectations and should have fans excited with scouting reports like this one from Bryan Driskell.
