Tight End

Chris Manhertz vs. Ian Thomas

The last position battle is to determine who will be the number two tight end behind Greg Olsen. This was a role that Ed Dickson had the past few seasons however he joined Seattle in free agency this offseason.

This battle will come down to veteran Chris Manhertz and rookie Ian Thomas. Manhertz has been a project for the Panthers but saw his role expand last year as he played in all 16 games. However, he will likely miss the entire training camp due foot surgery, according to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.

This battle will really be rookie Ian Thomas against himself with Manhertz likely to miss training camp. The fourth round pick from Indiana strength, and what should be able to get him on the field early in his career, his ability as a run blocker. This ability compliments what Greg Olsen is able to do on the field and allow the Panthers to have both on the field at the same time.

If Thomas is able to grasp the playbook and hit the ground running, Manhertz probably won’t have a chance to take the number two spot when he returns from injury.
