Outside Wide Receiver

Torrey Smith vs. Curtis Samuel

The depth chart at wide receiver is very much in the air after Devin Funchess. The past two offseasons the Panthers have invested heavily in this position and the question is now where these pieces fit.

The team will need to find a player to line up on the outside opposite Funchess and this battle will likely come down to veteran Torrey Smith and Curtis Samuel.

Torrey Smith was the player that came back in the Daryl Worley trade and is a deep threat at the position. He would be able to fill a similar role to Ted Ginn Jr. from a few seasons ago. This home run ability should work well with Cam Newton’s big arm.

Smith will likely be competing with last year’s second round pick Curtis Samuel. The former Ohio State Buckeye has incredible speed, and is a home run threat similar to Smith. However, Samuel was behind for most of the season due to injuries in training camp. Once he seemed to finally get healthy, and was contributing, he suffered an ankle injury that ended his season.

The Panthers have been cautious with Samuel this offseason but he should be ready for the start of training camp.
