Carolina Hurricanes: Lucas Wallmark signs two-year contract

The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Thursday that they have agreed to a two-year deal with forward Lucas Wallmark.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Lucas Wallmark was able to agree to a two-year deal on Thursday that is a two-way contract for the upcoming season with a one-way deal in 2019-2020. This upcoming season, Wallmark will earn $650,000 at the NHL level or $70,000 at the AHL level with a $100,000 guarantee. In the second year of this deal, Wallmark will make $700,000.

President and General Manager Don Weddell said about Wallmark:

"“Lucas has continued to show his offensive upside in the American League, where he was a point-per-game player last season,” said Waddell. “We expect him to continue to work to become a regular contributor on the NHL level.”"

This signing announced on Thursday will be exciting news for Charlotte Checkers’ fans who got to watch Lucas Wallmark up close and saw his talent. He played a pivotal role in the Checkers’ success as they finished third in the Atlantic Division. The center was even named the team’s MVP last year and he finished with 55 points in 45 regular season games. During the Checkers’ playoff run, he added four more points in eight playoff games.

The 22-year old was a fourth round pick in 2014 by the Hurricanes and has spent a majority of his time at the AHL level. He played in 11 games last year at the NHL level and even earned his first career NHL goal against the St. Louis Blues on December 30th of last year.

This upcoming season will likely see Wallmark spending a majority of the upcoming season with the Charlotte Checkers at the AHL level. However, he will see some time with the Carolina Hurricanes depending on injuries and likely have a bigger role in 2019.
