Doeren’s Path Thus Far

Before coming to Raleigh, Doeren led the Northern Illinois Huskies to back-to-back Mid-American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2012. His 23-4 overall record, 15-1 in conference play, enticed NC State Athletic Director Deborah Yow to sign him after firing Tom O’Brien. However, his first season in Raleigh ended with a 3-9 record, 0-8 in ACC play.

The Pack bounced back in Doeren’s second year, ending the season with an 8-5 mark, including a win over UCF in the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl. The biggest difference in his first year and the next was the consistency behind center as NC State played Jacoby Brissett, now playing with the Indianapolis Colts. However, the next season ended with only seven wins and a loss to now-Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and Mississippi State in the Belk Bowl.

After adding Eli Drinkwitz as offensive coordinator and Boise State transfer quarterback Ryan Finley weeks before the start of the season, Doeren’s Wolfpack began to solidify and come together despite another 7-6 finish. However, the 2016-17 season ended with two road wins against Syracuse and North Carolina as well as a resounding Independence Bowl win over Vanderbilt, who’d beaten the Pack shortly after Doeren was hired back in 2012.
