One week into the college basketball season, the Tar Heels and Blue Devils already have shown their talent with the ACC Co-Players of the Week.

The 2017-18 college basketball season officially kicked off on Friday with all four local teams in action. After the weekend’s games concluded, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its Player(s) of the Week and its Rookie of the Week.

North Carolina junior forward Luke Maye and Duke freshman forward Marvin Bagley III both earned this week’s ACC Co-Player of the Week honors. Bagley also snagged this week’s honor of Rookie of the Week.

Co-Player of the Week: Luke Maye, F, North Carolina

The Tar Heels only played one game this weekend, but Maye shined the brightest in UNC’s contest against Northern Iowa. The Huntersville, N.C. native led the way with a career-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds. The double-double in the season opener was just the second time Maye recorded such a feat with the first time coming in last season’s Sweet 16 game against Butler. The Heels pounded past the Panthers at the Dean E. Smith Center Friday evening, 86-69.

Co-Player/Rookie of the Week: Marvin Bagley III, F, Duke

While the Heels only played once this weekend, the Devils won a pair of games in that time. Bagley dominated both games with over 20 points and 10 rebounds in each of those. With those marks, Bagley became the first Duke freshman to record a double-double in his first two games. The Phoenix native, ironically, led the Devils in scoring against the Elon Phoenix with 25 points. That also set the freshman season-opener scoring record that was previously held by Shavlik Randolph in 2002. Bagley also hauled in 10 rebounds against Elon as the Devils decimated the Phoenix Friday evening, 97-68.
