North Carolina Sports: Four NC Players Awarded Weekly Honors

For this week’s ACC players of the week, the Demon Deacons picked up two weekly honors each while the Wolfpack and Tar Heels had one player each.

The Atlantic Coast Conference named its weekly players of the week for football, and the state of North Carolina filled a vast majority of those spots. Wake Forest had two players in the conference honors, second behind Miami who had three players selected. North Carolina and NC State each also added a player from each university to the week’s top players in the ACC.

Offensive Back of the Week: John Wolford, QB, Wake Forest

The Demon Deacons’ senior quarterback John Wolford combined to score six touchdowns against Syracuse, propelling Wake Forest to the 64-43 win last Saturday. The Jacksonville, Fla. native threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-38 passing. On the ground, he scored thrice and ran for 136 yards on 19 carries. Four of Wolford’s six scores came in the second half. Prior to the halftime break, the Deacons trailed the Orange, 38-24. Wolford reached a career high in total yards with 499, and his six touchdowns tied a Wake Forest school record.

Receiver of the Week: Cam Serigne, TE, Wake Forest

Deacons’ redshirt senior tight end Cam Serigne hauled in seven catches, three for touchdowns, for 119 yards Saturday against Syracuse. Serigne made a handful of milestones Saturday afternoon. The Ashburn, Va. native currently has 152 career catches and 1,912 career receiving yards, all-time highs in the ACC for a tight end. He also has 20 career touchdown catches, tied for the all-time high for an ACC tight end with former Virginia Tech Hokie Bucky Hodges and former Virginia Cavalier Heath Miller.

Defensive Lineman of the Week: Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State

Now a three-time defensive lineman of the week, Wolfpack senior Bradley Chubb catalyzed the NC State defense to a 17-14 win on the road at Boston College. The Marietta, Ga. native tallied 5.5 tackles for a loss against the Eagles, including 2.5 sacks. In addition, Chubb surpassed former Wolfpack great and 2006 NFL No. 1 overall draft pick Mario Williams for career quarterback sacks and tackles for a loss. Chubb currently sits sixth in the ACC in tackles for a loss with 57.5 and is tied for 18th in conference history in career sacks with 26.

Specialist of the Week: Anthony Ratliff-Williams, WR, North Carolina

Tar Heels’ sophomore wide receiver Anthony Ratliff-Williams picked up his second ACC Specialist of the Week honor of the season after UNC earned its first conference win of the season at Pittsburgh last Friday. The Matthews, N.C. native started the game off for the Heels with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Ratliff-Williams also threw and caught touchdowns against the Panthers to boost the Heels to the 34-31 win. Ratliff-Williams ended the game with two kickoff returns for 120 yards as well as five receptions for 75 yards. His passing touchdown was a 35-yard strike to Josh Cabrera.
