Wake Forest Demon Deacons: Seminoles Slip Away With Win
The Seminoles pull out a last-minute touchdown drive to dash the Demon Deacons’ hopes for an undefeated season.
Wake Forest (4-1, 1-1 ACC) entered Saturday’s contest undefeated, but Florida State (1-2, 1-1 ACC) handed the Demon Deacons their first loss of the season with a touchdown in the final minute of regulation. Seminole quarterback James Blackman only needed one play following a Wake punt to find Auden Tate for a 40-yard touchdown that secured the Florida State victory at BB&T Field, 26-19.
John Wolford led the Deacs through the air with 271 yards on 24-of-34 passing while also rushing for 63 yards on 19 carries. Wolford threw one interception but also scored on a three-yard rush midway through the second quarter. Greg Dortch led the team in receiving with 10 catches for 110 yards.

Patrick also caught three passes for 26 yards. Blackman ended Saturday’s contest with 11 completions on 21 attempts through the air for 121 yards and the last-minute touchdown. Tate led FSU in receiving yards with 47 on two receptions.
After Wolford and Patrick scored on back-to-back drives, Kyle Meyers picked off Wolford that set the Seminoles up for a Ricky Aguayo 27-yard field goal, giving Florida State the 13-12 lead going into halftime. Following a Demon Deacons’ three-and-out to start the second half, FSU added another field goal before Wake retook the lead early in the fourth quarter on a Matt Colburn seven-yard rushing touchdown. Aguayo hit another field goal with less than seven minutes left to tie the game at 19 apiece where the game remained scoreless until Blackman’s strike to Tate to win.
The Demon Deacons will next travel to Clemson to take on the No. 2 Tigers Saturday. Kickoff from Death Valley is set for 12 p.m.
