The Charlotte Hornets do have the team option on backup point guard Ramon Sessions, would they prefer to take it or not?

All this time with the Charlotte Hornets and their off season and it looks like I missed something fairly obvious. Ramon Sessions has a team option for the upcoming season. That means the Hornets could choose to let him become a free agent and save about six million dollars in cap room.

The question is whether or not the team does it. Sessions scored six points and three assists in sixteen minutes a game when healthy last season. He shot a close to acceptable thirty-three percent from the three point line. He was less of a presence at the foul line this year than he was in year’s past, but he also was not supposed to call his own number as much.

Sessions is in his tenth season in the league. At 6’3” 190 pounds he offers a larger cover to opposing point guards than Kemba Walker, but that is about it. The trick is not so cutting Sessions as replacing him. With him in the fold, at least you think you know what you are getting out of the backup point guard spot even if it is not perfect.

So let’s cut him and try to replace him. Our key aspects will be finding someone statistically superior and someone who is a better defender (read: larger) than Sessions. That is not necessarily what the Hornets brought Sessions in to do.

Darren Collison could be an option. The Hornets could use his brand of on-ball defense off of the bench, but Collison was a starter in Sacramento. Despite the similarity his last salary shared with Sessions, Collison might be looking for and a bigger role even though he was hurt for part of last season. If he is willing to take on the role, he might just the guy.

Patty Mills will also be available. Unfortunately, if he is smart he will stay with the Spurs. He has a good thing going with them, despite the Hornets having a use for a bench point guard who shoots above 40% from three.

Maybe we should not give up on Sessions just yet. He might be the cheapest option for the team to look at, and he still could included in potential trades down the line if the team picks up his option. There is definitely a bird in the hand dynamic going on with this one.
