Carolina Panthers: Four Trading Up Scenarios
After looking at options for staying put, now we look at the Carolina Panthers swinging for the fences in some trade scenarios.
There is one phrase that the Carolina Panthers could get Roger Goodell to utter on Draft Day that would surprise essentially no one: “We have a trade.” The question that would inevitably follow is ‘what kind of trade?’ That too is not a given either, the Panthers have been maneuvering in ways that they could both move up or move down.
Hidden behind this reasoning is the Panthers possession of four picks in the drafts first three rounds. They have picks eight, forty, sixty-four, and ninety-eight. That sounds nice, but what kind of value does that have?
There is an NFL Value Chart that some general managers use, and others at least know of, that attempts to figure out in points form what picks are worth. Armed with this information, you can begin a negotiation around what that chart says, using however many picks you need to match point values.
The Panthers under Dave Gettleman don’t usually target a particular person in the draft. It makes trading up seem unlikely. This draft is also considerably deep in the early rounds, which mean stocking up on talent in quantity may be a better deal than stocking up for quality. We explore both possibilities and what the draft chart say it would take to make them a reality.
