North Carolina Tar Heels: Looking Back at 33 Bowl Games
28. 1970 Peach Bowl
Starting to think that Atlanta has not been so kind to the Tar Heels since three of the worst bowl performances all seem to have occurred there.
The 1970 Peach Bowl was the first bowl game of the Bill Dooley era, and the Tar Heels had not been to a bowl game in seven years and could still count the total number of bowl games in team history on one hand.
Unable to attract Penn State, the Peach Bowl organizers reached out west to bring the eighth ranked Arizona State Sun Devils and bring them to Grant Field. The Sun Devils were undefeated while the Tar Heels had gone 8-3 on the year.
Conditions were bad during the game as a winter storm hit and snow, rain, and sleet alternated in appearance during the game. Arizona State started hot at 14-0, but the Tar Heels did all their damage in the second quarter as they scored 26 points. Don McCauley was responsible for all three Carolina touchdowns.
Sun Devil tailback Monroe Eley ran for 173 yards and two scores as Arizona State piled it on after halftime. The magic that the Tar Heels had found in the second quarter dissipated. The Sun Devils walked away with their very first bowl victory.
