Charlotte Hornets: An Off-Season Fantasy (Or is it?)
- Trade with the New York Knicks: ~$ 1 million at most
Hornets send: C Cody Zeller, F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, G Marco Belinelli, G Ramon Sessions, F Christian Wood
Knicks send: F Carmelo Anthony, G Courtney Lee, F Kyle O’Quinn
This is where we get far more ambitious than the previous Carmelo article. Along with Anthony, we also get Lee and the mighty O’Quinn. In return, the Knicks get Belinelli’s one year deal, Sessions’ one year deal, and Wood’s non-guaranteed deal. That allows them to get out of two contracts rather than one and gets the Knicks spending money to build around Kristaps Porzingis in the future.
The loss of Zeller would be offset by drafting Collins. This trade comes after the NBA Draft because Zeller’s extension does not kick in until the new NBA fiscal year in July. The trade should fulfil the rules of two teams over the cap. O’Quinn could add to depth if nothing else.

Hardwood Houdini
So now we have our new post, star power injection, and a quality defender/shooter to bring off the bench. Still need that point guard. The Hornets are still well over the cap at this point, but they are under the luxury tax due to years of careful luxury tax management.
- Hornets use mid-level exception on free agent point guard Ty Lawson
I do not know what the market for Lawson is right now. It is probably better than the veteran’s minimum he made this season, but not starting point guard money around ten million a year. I am hoping the midlevel of $5 million per is a nice compromise.
- Relinquish rights to Brian Roberts, Briante Weber, Treveon Graham, and Johnny O’Bryant: – $5.8 million
Covers the costs of the incoming rookies. The remaining money can be used to sign undrafted free agents to fill the final spots on the roster.
So after all that, what kind of roster have we created?
