The Wells Fargo Championship got a big boost when one of golf’s current stars committed to be there.

This year is going to be an odd year for the Wells Fargo Championship. This is the year where it temporarily moves from Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Country Club to Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club so that Quail Hollow can be ready for the PGA Championship to arrive in August.

That would be enough change for anybody, but even that is not news. Golf does not focus on the events as much as it focuses on the players. The big gun in American golf right now is Coastal Carolina’s own Dustin Johnson. He was the Vegas favorite to win the Masters before suffering an awkward fall and pulling out of the year’s first major.

With Johnson out, the next question became when he would come back. While other tournaments may have to sweat a Johnson decision, the Wells Fargo will not. Johnson has announced that he will be at the Wells Fargo according to reports from the Associated Press.

  • With Johnson playing his collegiate golf at Conway, SC, any events that occur relatively close to that location become something of homecoming events for him. Wilmington is not as close as Myrtle Beach is, but the idea should be similar.

It is also good to see some big names still planning to attend the Wells Fargo. In a normal year, the Wells Fargo is a good prep tournament for June’s U.S. Open since Quail Hollow Country Club has some of the hallmarks of a U.S. Open course. Charlotte is also fairly easy to get to with its big airport.

Therefore, there is a concern about attending this year’s version. There will be prize money and FedEx points for the winner, but the tournament is still in a busy period where some players are looking for a spot to take a break. Without the U.S. Open test, it seems that more players would choose to miss it this year.

Maybe I’ll be wrong. Maybe Dustin Johnson will bring all his friends to enjoy the beautiful Wilmington beach weather. At least we know Johnson himself will be there.
