The Davidson Wildcats will need more big performances from Jack Gibbs in order to make a mark in the Atlantic Ten Tournament.

The Davidson Wildcats season is almost over and it has been a learning experience compared to the Wildcats teams of last year and the year before. The good news is that the Wildcats head into the Atlantic Ten tournament right in the middle of the pack of their conference. The bad news is that they are out of the running for an at-large NCAA bid.

The team’s ninth place locale was kept intact with the Wildcats defeated the St. Bonaventure Bonnies 68-63. The win was impressive in that the Bonnies were in a much better position than in the conference and had more to play for.

Maybe we have should have known that Jackson Gibbs would show up on senior night. Show up he did with some twenty-nine points and three steals. The six foot guard improved his season average to 21.5 points per game and his three point shooting percentage almost reached forty percent. Gibbs gets one more chance in the regular season to improve those numbers when the team goes to Rhode Island on Saturday.

More from Davidson Wildcats

Gibbs is one of four seniors. That means that this team should have most of its available talent to build on for next year. Yes, they will miss Gibbs and his scoring.

The Atlantic Ten Tournament remains the one way that Davidson could extend his season. If the team can buckle down and grind out a big weekend, then maybe they could get a spot in the field of sixty-four. That would be a far more satisfying send off for Gibbs than for the Wildcats to whimper quietly out of the way.
