5. Free Safety – Deon Grant (2001-2003)

The free safety spot for much of the team’s history has been the OTHER safety. This is the position that Roman Harper occupies on the current Panthers team. Pat Terrell was the team’s first free safety and manned the spot for the 1996 playoff run. Brent Alexander was brought in during the George Seifert tenure to man that spot, but he was only here two years.

Deon Grant occupied the position during the Panthers’ 2003 playoff run that ended at the Super Bowl. It is to Grant that I award this spot to. There have really been a bunch of short timers who have played this spot for the Panthers. Grant at least saw the most team success. Grant was good for about sixty tackles and three picks a year.

Grant was a second round pick in the 2000 draft out of Tennessee where he was first team All-America. He was drafted behind another Panthers defensive back Rashard Anderson. Anderson turned out to be a bust, while Grant played for four teams and won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2012.
