24. Fullback – Brad Hoover (2000-2009)

For a position with so few frills as fullback, the Panthers have had their share of characters. There was Howard Griffith during the 1996 season. There was William Floyd in the Seifert years. There was Brad Hoover in the Fox years. We had Mike Tolbert for three Pro Bowls.

Yet the definitive Panther fullback has be Hoover. He was converted to the position from tailback and the team was not afraid to hand him the ball from time to time. That led to the ‘Hooov’ chant whenever he got the ball. Like Tolbert he could catch it out of the backfield.

The Panthers have been dedicated to the run game in most of their incarnations. That means that good blocking has been essential to team success. While that means building strong lines and playing guys like Muhammad, it also has meant having grinding fullbacks.

It is not a coincidence that Hoover was on the roster when both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart ran for over a thousand yards.
