Former Carolina Panthers star Steve Smith is on his way to become a NFL analyst.

Perhaps Steve Smith’s days of terrorizing the Carolina Panthers are not over after all. No, he is not coming back to football with another team. He is joining the legion of talking heads over at the NFL Network according to reports from Andie Hagemann of the NFL Network.

Smith should supply a lot of commentary if his playing career is anything to judge by. It will be interesting to tune in and hear what he has to say about the active defensive backs that he faced. It will also be interesting to see what he says about the Panthers whenever they should come up for discussion. How restrained can we reasonably expect Smith to be?

Smith will have to compete for oxygen with the likes of Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin. It could be difficult to get too much said in a room where those two are involved.

So how will this experiment turn out? Will Smith give a lot of dope on his former team? Will he rip the front office or Cam Newton? Or will Smith keep to the professional issues at hand and only acknowledge his former team in passing? Whatever the result, it should at least make for good television.

I still regret that Smith did not choose to return to the team for one more day and retire as a Panther. He most certainly will have to return when his jersey is honored or he is added to the ring of honor. If he does make Canton then hopefully he will be the first Panthers bust in there in a Panthers uniform.
