The North Carolina Tar Heels officially lost Mitch Trubisky yesterday.

Yesterday the North Carolina Tar Heels received word that they had been waiting for since the end of the football season. Junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky declared for the NFL Draft after one year of starting for the Tar Heels. The Mentor, Ohio native threw for thirty touchdown passes this past season to set a single season record.

Trubisky has become a favorite of the NFL scouts. He has a 6’3” 220 lbs frame and an accurate arm. He minimizes mistakes and only threw for six interceptions on the year. He is more mobile than you think, and that could buy him some time in the pocket at the next level. He will have to adjust to going under center, but that is just part of the job.

He is highly considered to be the top quarterback prospect in the draft and some mock drafters even have him going number one overall. His appeal to the Cleveland Browns would be that he is a quarterback prospect but also a hometown kid, more or less. Even if the Browns pass on him, Trubisky is well considered enough to go as high as two to the San Francisco 49ers. Obviously the 49ers have no tie to Ohio to see with rose colored glasses.

More from North Carolina Tar Heels

Trubisky will also leave Chapel Hill with the single season passing record of 3,748 yards. This is only surprising in that it means the Heels have never had a 4,000 passer. If Coach Larry Fedora sticks around with his system, one would assume that mark would fall eventually.

The Tar Heel offense will have a cast of different faces to figure out this upcoming season. That will include Trubisky’s old position. Nathan Elliot was the backup this season, but two freshmen may also have their eyes on the spot. According to reports from InsideCarolina’s Greg Barnes, the team may also explore graduate transfers like Notre Dame’s Malik Zaire.

Good luck to Mitch Trubisky as he moves into the pro ranks. It will not be easy to replace him.
