The Appalachian State Mountaineers continued their winning ways last night at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers did not have Marcus Cox last night, but it turned out that they did not need him. Their offense found enough big plays in the first half while the defense kept the Cajuns out of the end zone all game long in a 24-0 decision. Even when scoring tapered off in the second half, the defense continued to prevail.

The Cajuns were unable to get out of their own way either. The first drive of the game looked like it might lead to points when a third down illegal man downfield penalty took away a big gain. Then a false start moved the ball further back and nothing came of the series.

App State opened the game aggressively, throwing the ball downfield to Sheadon Meadors on the first play of their first drive. Jalen Moore ran the ball in from two yards out and that turned out to a be a score the Cajuns would never equal.

Moore would find the end zone again later in the first half. The other App State touchdown was on a nifty pass from Taylor Lamb to wide open freshman tight end Collin Reed. The only smirches for Lamb was a late first half interception and two second half fumbles that the Mountaineers retained.

None of those turnovers bore fruit as the App State defense got to Cajun quarterback Anthony Jennings time and time again. The LSU transfer got used to seeing the numbers of linebacker Dezmin Reed and his compatriots.  There were five sacks on the night, and if the play got off, Devan Stringer was there to clean it up.

The Mountaineers are unbeaten in league play so far. They return home to Boone this week to face the Idaho Vandals. They still have to be the favorite to win the Sun Belt.
