The North Carolina Tar Heels former quarterback Marquise Williams is getting another shot with the Green Bay Packers.
Toss in the random North Carolina Tar Heels reference for the day. At some point when I wasn’t looking the Minnesota Vikings cut former Tar Heels quarterback and current NFL rookie Marquise Williams. That would seem to be a bad thing, but it is okay now because Williams has now been signed by the Green Bay Packers.
I thought Williams on the Vikings was a pretty good fit all things considered. The Vikings were a team with Teddy Bridgewater well entrenched at the position. Coordinator Norv Turner has been good with quarterbacks who can throw downfield. It was a nice spot. It just didn’t happen.
So now we get to see Williams battling for a role on another team hailing from the Old Northwest. Once again it is a team that uses a mobile quarterback of sorts. The Packers would like the stability at running back that Minnesota enjoys, but they rely on the quarterback more.

Like the Vikings, the Packers have a tested offensive coaching staff in place and a good record training up quarterbacks. This is the group that not only puts Rodgers in goods situations but also turned Matt Flynn into a well paid free agent behind him.
So this what Williams could take advantage of as he aims to make the roster. Teams carry two quarterbacks these days, so perhaps the best Williams should aim for is the practice squad third stringer. To get that role he will have to beat out Joe Callahan.
Callahan is a small school prospect from Wesley College. That does not mean that he should be taken for granted though. Williams was brought in after the Packers cut former Miami quarterback Ryan Williams, so they must have had a favorable enough view of Callahan to keep him instead.
If Williams fails to make the Packers roster, Canada is just a little ways over the lakes.
