Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson was involved in a head on collision earlier today.

For the second year in a row the Carolina Panthers have gone through a high profile car wreck. Fortunately this one was less high profile than last year’s.

Also it does not seem to have injured driver and Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson. It did injure the other victim in the head on collision, which fate chose to be former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone. All hopes and wishes for Boone to get well after a broken pelvis are greatly appreciated.

The wreck occurred in Union County, North Carolina. Union is a rural county that has seen growth in the last decade on his western side. That is where Indian Trail, Stallings, and Weddington sit as bedroom communities for people who work in Charlotte.

Union County’s roads were not designed with high volume traffic in mind. They are mostly long grid-like country roads with higher speed limits to get through the rural sections faster. That existence has had to be adjusted over time as parts have become more surburban. It has not quite adjusted fast enough in some cases.

There are roads in Union County that take huge curves without much notice and basically travel perpendicular to themselves. It is not so common, but the area that Thompson was driving in while searching for cell phone named Mayhem was on a road that does some of that strange behavior. Not really right there the wreck was, but it does its share.

Potter Road is one of the north-south arteries in Union County. It comes out of Stallings and essentially crosses the county beyond NC 200 to the state line. The AP article on the crash was the first I had heard Potter described as near Weddington (has the town grown that much?) though there is not much it is truly close to (Mineral Springs? It’s been awhile) since the road is like the halfway point between Charlotte and Monroe (or Waxhaw and Monroe) for the east-west roads in the county.

It is also a two lane road for most of its existence. This is why Thompson hit Boone in the crash, there was not much margin for error when he started digging for his cell phone. Pair that with a generous speed limit and the smaller likelihood of running across anyone and you can understand why Thompson was not concerned about diving for his cell phone.

Thompson got off pretty easy in all this. He was cited for driving left of the center line. He was not hurt. Boone was also lucky in that he was not killed, but a broken pelvis is no fun. Boone had been a CFL quarterback last year and it is hard to say what his next career move will be.
