The Wells Fargo Championship may not have had a well known winner, but it did provide some Sunday drama.

The Wells Fargo Championship almost delivered on its promise for the final day. The Charlotte based tournament saw a playoff to decide a winner. It saw some hard charges from big names. Yet it did not see a fan favorite win the tournament.

First off, Jordan Spieth skipped the tournament so he evidently is planning his U.S. Open preparatory time somewhere else. With Spieth gone the crowd favorite was likely to be one of the mainline American golfers.

For three days Ricky Fowler fit that bill. On Sunday morning, he was right where he wanted to be. Then he turned in a poor front nine and never could come back from that. He shot 74 and finished fourth. Englishman Justin Rose and his new putter grip finished one better for third.

  • Fowler had company at the end of day. Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson put together rounds of 66 and stormed back to end the day with Fowler. Although they too would miss the real drama, the playoff between James Hahn and Roberto Castro.

Hahn, a player hoping to stay on tour, pulled out the victory over Castro when his opponent ran into some trouble. Castro hit his drive on the drink on the first playoff hole. With his next shot he hit into a spectator’s head, only to have it land in a shoe. Hahn simply made par to win.

The Wells Fargo featured some weird weather as it was windy. That suppressed the scoring in some rounds. The pin placements for some of the holes were simply ungodly and one wonders if this is normal practice or some sort of bizarre preparation for the upcoming PGA Championship in 2017.

The course did its job though, giving participants a more US Open style feel. This year it came before the Players Championship which is later this week. The Open itself is in June ending on Father’s Day.
