17. X Wide Receiver – Mushin Muhammad (1996-2004, 2008-2009)

The former Michigan State Spartan was the exact opposite of Steve Smith in some ways. He was big and rugged. He was valued because he became a good run blocker, something the Panthers valued enough to bring him back for a second go round in 2008.

His first Pro Bowl was not even when the Panthers were all that good. He thrived in the West Coast offense of the Seifert days and made the Pro Bowl in 1999 as a result.

Muhammad was more than a blocker though. He was All-Pro in 2004 when he made for the early season loss of Steve Smith by becoming Jake Delhomme’s key target for that year. Muhammad almost saw as many playoff runs as Kasay, but he was with the Bears in 2005.

Like Smith, Muhammad was able to get open for a long touchdown pass in the Super Bowl. While the search for someone to replace Steve Smith is still kind of new, the Panthers have been trying to replace Muhammad since forever. It maybe that their most recent attempt is current rookie Devin Funchess.
