4: Re-signing Mike Tolbert

It is amazing to think that Tolbert’s Super Bowl fumbles were his first in four years. Tolbert continues to offer a short yardage running option and an outlet receiving option. He can lead block too when it is called upon.

Keeping Tolbert was important because it showed that the Panthers want to keep the offensive pieces familiar to Cam Newton around him because the team is moving in a win now mode. If they had more money to throw around perhaps it would be more obvious. The Panthers were also able to shrink Tolbert’s cap number when they re-signed him.

While Tolbert answers some questions in the backfield, it is important to note that the Panthers could still look to improve the halfback position. Jonathan Stewart will not run forever and has had his fair share of injuries. He was even denied a 1,000 yard regular season by them last year.
