It’s hard to read much into the North Carolina Tar Heels reclaiming the top spot in the Coaches Poll.

The North Carolina Tar Heels got back on top of one of the polls over the weekend. The Coaches Poll move the Heels up to the top spot after previous number one Oklahoma lost to Iowa State. While the coaches may have done this, the Associated Press did not remove Oklahoma from the top spot since the Sooners now have the same number of losses as the Tar Heels.

The divided opinion of the pollsters is just more evidence that the college basketball scene is lacking a truly great team at this point in the year.

The Tar Heels have performed well in the conference season so far. They have no conference losses in a competitive ACC. Yet they have not delivered a total team performance over the last few games. The game against Virginia Tech is an example of this. While the Tar Heels got a solid performance from Brice Johnson, they are still missing the production of Marcus Paige. Paige’s shooting slump has hit its fourth game.

Without Paige, the Heels just simply are not ready for the title of best team in the country. When Paige comes out of his slump though, look out. The Heels will be in prime position to make a big run.

The Duke Blue Devils were 20th in the Coaches Poll when the week started. That will most likely change when the polls register Duke’s loss to Miami last night.
