The NC State Wolfpack firmed up their recruiting class by getting a commitment from a four star tight end.

The NC State Wolfpack got a lift to the notoriety of their recruiting class yesterday when they received the commitment of one Thaddeus Moss. Moss, a tight end, becomes the twenty-first Wolfpack commit as we get ever closer to National Signing Day.

So what is so special about Thaddeus Moss? Is it his height, 6’4”? Is the fact that he chose the Wolfpack over the offensive power house at Texas A&M the special thing? Or that he plays a position so ably served by Richard Grinnage in recent seasons and certain to be utilized in the Dave Doeren scheme?

All those things sound good, but the biggest item of newsworthiness is that Moss is the son of former NFL star wide receiver Randy Moss. While that is quite a legacy to live up to, Thaddeus Moss is approaching it the right way. According to reports from ESPN writer Tom VanHaaren, Moss kept father Randy out of the process until the very end.

As a result, Thaddeus Moss is going to the school that first offered him a scholarship and the one he feels most comfortable with. State should be glad to have him too, both because he is a four star recruit and because of the publicity that will follow the younger Moss through his college career.

As a tight end, the younger Moss is already in a position to build his own legacy. He does not have to worry about being the wide receiver that his father was because that is not his position. The comparisons to Randy Moss will come naturally enough if he has success.

The elder Moss had an interesting college career. Moss ran into some troubles at Florida State and transferred to Marshall. He had a prolific enough career at Marshall to finish in the Heisman voting. Of course he became an NFL All-Pro with the Vikings, Raiders, and Patriots. He will get a look from the Hall of Fame.

For NC State, adding new offensive weapons will be important as the team moves on from senior quarterback Jacoby Brissett to the next phase of Dave Doeren’s plan to move up in the ACC Atlantic Division.
