24. 1986 Aloha Bowl

The 7-3-1 North Carolina Tar Heels went to Hawaii to face the Arizona Wildcats in the last of the Dick Crum bowl berths.

It was a Tar Heels team that featured quarterback Mark Maye, whose son Luke Maye is now playing for the basketball team. Maye and the Tar Heels were bogged down with turnovers. The team committed five fumbles and lost all five of them. It was no wonder that Chuck Cecil, the hard hitting safety of the Wildcats, was named MVP of the game. Cecil would go on to a pro career where he gained the reputation as a head hunter.

The hole was too deep after three quarters with the Wildcats up 30-0. The Tar Heels would score the final three touchdowns to close the gap. Maye would throw for one and run for another.

This was the last hurrah of the Dick Crum teams in a way. Two years later Crum would be gone and Mack Brown would be put in charge of rebuilding the program.
