The battle of the Dooley brothers pit two similar philosophies. Both were big proponents of running the football. They knew other well and so the ACC Champion 9-2 Heels and the 10-1 Bulldogs should have played a close low scoring game. That is exactly what happened.

Vince Dooley and Georgia managed to get a little more out of their offense, and scored the only touchdown of the game in the third quarter. All of the points were scored in that single quarter alone. Georgia tailback Jimmy Poulos turned in a 163 yard effort and scored the only touchdown for Georgia.

With the lead, Georgia only had to keep the Tar Heels out of the end zone, which they did for the rest of the game.

Vince would become the athletic director at Georgia, while Bill would be denied when he sought a similar role at North Carolina. That would be the primary reason that Dooley would leave before the end of the decade. He would go to Virginia Tech where he would have that additional role.
