Charlotte 49ers at Kentucky Wildcats Preview

The Charlotte 49ers enter their Super Bowl this week. Yes, Temple remains the highest ranked team that the 49ers have played, but a trip to Kentucky is a trip to an SEC opponent. This is why you play football in the south, to go up against a SEC team.

Kentucky is done with its conference season, but it is still in need of two wins to reach bowl eligibility. That would require them to beat both Charlotte and Louisville in the coming weeks. A loss to Charlotte would take an important element to the Commonwealth Cup that will be played next week.

Opponent: Kentucky Wildcats (4-6)
Date: November 21
Time: 7:30 PM
TV: SEC Network
Venue: Commonwealth Stadium (Lexington, KY)

The Charlotte 49ers do not have a lot left to play for. There is pride, and there are a couple of individual milestones. Kalif Phillips can still reach the thousand yard barrier in this game. Again Phillips figures strongly into any 49ers gameplan to slow down the Kentucky offense by keeping them off the field.

Coach Mark Stoops will be trying to prevent though. The defensive minded coach will likely know that the run is his main concern and that he must shut it down. Stoops also knows that a loss to the 49ers would not be good if he wants to be one of the coaches looking at some of these openings that have appeared all over college football this year.

That said, he will have no problem letting Patrick Towles run the show on offense. The quarterback has thrown for over two thousand yards on the season. If he gets the pass going, don’t lose track of running back Stanley Williams. Williams will find his way into the gameplan.

Again the 49ers best chance in this game is catch Kentucky napping after a tough conference schedule. Try to keep it close and not turn the ball over. That is the way.

Prediction: 30-10 Kentucky
