North Carolina Tar Heels: #17 in CFP Rankings

The North Carolina Tar Heels are moving up in the last iteration of the College Football Playoff Rankings. The Playoff rankings seem to be a step slow compared to the polls. The Tar Heels are consistently five or six spots behind in the rankings than they are in the polls. The Tar Heels are number seventeen in the polls this week while they sit at number twelve in the other polls.

The good news for Tar Heels fans is that the team is moving up in the committee’s estimation. To continue the Tar Heels must win their final two games and hope for some cannibalism among the teams that are in front of them. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have yet to play each other. The same is true for Oklahoma State and Baylor. There is also the chance that Stanford could beat Notre Dame.

Still there are indications that the committee still is not taking the Tar Heels seriously. Last week I pointed out that the Heels were ranked behind Florida State, and this is still true this week. The Seminoles sit at number fourteen with no path to the playoff (although they could take out Florida to help other teams) and that is three spots ahead of the Tar Heels.

Another sign from the committee is the promotion of Navy to number sixteen. The Midshipmen are currently one of the teams tied for first in the American Athletic Conference. Navy is a feel good story and their only loss is to Notre Dame. Their existence in front of North Carolina demonstrates how little the committee thinks of the Tar Heels schedule.

The trump card for the Tar Heels is a potential matchup and victory over Clemson in Charlotte in the ACC Championship game. The Heels are not even in that game yet, but Clemson lurks as the best team in the country right now. There is still a long way to go before accurate speculation on that game can begin.

The Tar Heels play Virginia Tech this Saturday in Blacksburg.
