Bowl Projections: ACC First Look

facebooktwitterreddit

The time for Bowl Projections are here. The first place to go is the Atlantic Coast Conference where the North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils are already bowl eligible. So too are the NC State Wolfpack. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will be missing out on the bowl picture this year as the best they can do is finish with five wins.

In sorting out the Bowl Picture in the ACC, you must remember that Notre Dame has access to the ACC bowl berths. Right now that would not matter because Notre Dame is projected as one of the Final Four in the College Football Playoff, but I tend to believe that Stanford will end that mystery. Therefore the Irish could bounce less desirable teams down a spot.

It also worth noting that the Orange Bowl is one of the Playoff games this year. This is unlikely to have an impact since Clemson is currently projected to be one of the playoff teams.

The New Years Games might also take an ACC team (read Florida State) and that could cause the ACC to fail in filling all of its bowl obligations.

First bid – Playoff – Clemson Tigers

Second bid – Fiesta Bowl – Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Fiesta Bowl is not locked into a conference selection and with a lack of worthy Pacific 12 candidates, they will likely grab a team that does well nationally. That would be the Irish.

Third bid – Peach Bowl – Florida State Seminoles

The Peach Bowl is in a similar position to the Fiesta, but they can keep a southern tie by bringing the Seminoles into Atlanta.

Fourth bid – Russell Athletic BowlNorth Carolina Tar Heels

This scenario presumes a Clemson defeat of the Heels in the ACC Championship Game. The Tar Heels would be targeted to Orlando here.

Fifth Bid – TaxSlayer (formerly Gator) Bowl – Pitt Panthers

I hope that the bowls reward Pitt with a sunny trip south instead of bundling them off to the Pinstripe Bowl in New York which is not unlikely.

Sixth Bid – Belk BowlDuke Blue Devils

Expecting Duke to win out, which is why they get the nod here over State and Virginia Tech.

Seventh Bid – Pinstripe Bowl – Louisville Cardinals

Eighth Bid – Sun BowlNC State Wolfpack

Ninth Bid – Military Bowl – Miami Hurricanes

Next: UNC #17 in CFP Rankings

Tenth Bid – Quick Lane Bowl – Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech could jump some teams on this list as there will probably be a big turnout for Frank Beamer’s last game.
