Valiant Effort: #16 FSU defeats NC State 34-17
Last season in front of a sellout Carter-Finley crowd, NC State jumped all over Florida State in the first quarter to lead 24-7. The Wolfpack ended up losing that game 56-41 amid second half controversy that involved perceived fake injuries by the Seminoles to slow the Pack down.
On Saturday afternoon at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, the game was very similar to the year before. This time a confident Wolfpack team punched FSU in the mouth several times and at one point led 17-7, before the Seminoles (8-2, 6-2) inched their way back to a 17- 17 halftime tie and a 34-17 victory. Jimbo Fisher’s team struggled early and often as the Wolfpack capitalized on multiple Everett Golson turnovers.
This was supposed to be a game in which previous starter Sean Maguire was replaced with Golson because of inconsistent play. However, in this game Maguire got his job back in the second quarter as he replaced any ineffective Golson to lead the Seminoles on four consecutive scoring drives. In total, Florida State survived five (5) turnovers in the win.

NC State was stout at times on defense and disrupted much of what Florida State wanted to do. As the game wore on, the Seminoles’ adjusted and the Wolfpack offense became less effective in what they were trying to accomplish. The Pack had virtually no running game and relied almost exclusively on quarterback draws and a passing attack. Though the game was another loss for the Wolfpack (6-4, 2-4), the team played well for the most part as they head into the final stretch of the season.
Note: Seminole running back Dalvin Cook had 138 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns as he also broke Florida State’s single-season rushing record held by Warrick Dunn with 1,242 yards in 1995. With several games remaining, Cook should significantly add to the record.
