Amway Coaches Poll Week 12: North Carolina #12

facebooktwitterreddit

The Amway Coaches Poll for Week 12 is out. The big thing to notice is the jump of the North Carolina Tar Heels to number 12. This puts them just outside the top ten as teams have been beating up on each other among those top ranks.

The Tar Heels have moved from number 23 to number 12 in this poll in the last two weeks. That is partly from putting sixty-six on Duke and fifty-nine on Miami. It is also because Florida State lost to Clemson, LSU dropped two games, and other teams have gotten beat in front of the Heels.

North Carolina still has a limited path to the playoff. Neither Virginia Tech nor NC State will be seen as a quality win at this point. Only a meeting with Clemson in Charlotte would be a gamechanger.

Meanwhile other teams around the Heels will need to lose. The Big 12 has TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma along with unbeaten Oklahoma State. Those teams still have to play each other and that may enable North Carolina to rise further. Notre Dame has to face Stanford, which also could help the Tar Heels with a Cardinal win.

North Carolina beat Illinois by 34. Ohio State beat Illinois by 25. North Carolina beat Wake Forest by 36. Notre Dame beat Wake Forest by 21. Sure it’s cherry-picking, but it suggests that this is not as crazy as it might have seemed at the beginning of year.

Appalachian State remained in the others receiving votes section. The Mountaineers are still a game behind Arkansas State in the Sun Belt title race.
