Charles Tillman: He Saw the Sign

Charles Tillman has a confession to make. The Peanut did it.

One of the strange sidelines of the Packers-Panthers game was Cam Newton taking down a pro-Packers banner from the stadium wall and taking it back to the Panthers locker room. It was a story that went in several different directions.

It was cheered by Panthers fans that their quarterback would take such an action to protect his house. In a similar vein it is also against team policy at the stadium to display signs for the opposing team. So the sign should not have been there at all.

The Packers fan who had the sign was miffed. He had spent big money on good tickets and a fair amount of money on the sign itself. So he called the police to report his sign as stolen. The Panthers have moved to compensate the fan according to the Fayetteville Observer.

More from Old North Banter

It made for a nice little story for Newton and the fans, but yesterday brought a new revelation. It was not Cam’s idea. The idea to remove the banner came from veteran cornerback Charles Tillman. He went to Newton with it.

Tillman spent the early years of his career and his prime with the Chicago Bears. After twelve years of playing the Packers twice a year, Tillman was not a fan. He had embraced the rivalry. Evidently those feelings did not leave after he came to Carolina. It was Tillman who noticed the sign and Tillman who wanted it gone.

Next: Panthers beat Packers

Tillman’s veteran presence has been good for a team that has maintained a united locker room throughout the season. He and fellow former Bear Jared Allen were good acquisitions just for those benefits alone. Now he has another victory over his rival Packers to celebrate.

The Carolina Panthers play the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on Sunday.
